Tutorial to make C-intro & gameboot with screenshots

Intruction to make intro.pmf and/or gameboot,pmf
=================================

Tools required:
1) XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe
2) Max DVD to AVI Converter (optional - for best quality intro or gameboot later)
3) Windows Movie Maker
4) Notepad
5) Virtual Dub Mod
6) Wav editor
7) UMD Stream Composer (SONY TOOL - DO NOT ASK FOR IT HERE)
8) PMF Creater

- Before we begin, I will just use the word "test" for naming the file and "desktop" as my directory.
- I use avi file to make, you can use mp4 too but must install the correct codec so that window movie maker can recognise. I have not tested other format yet but it sould work if you have the correct codec
- I use Sound Forge 8.0d to explain frequency editing later. You can use other wave tool.
- The screenshots may not look the same as your working program but it doesn't matter because I edited them to save space.
- Sony Sound Forge 8.0d download link, Ctrl+F to search (must register to use)

Converting DVD to avi format with Max DVD to AVI Converter
------------------------------------------------------------------
Use this only if you want to clip off some nice part of the dvd movie dics.
Otherwise just skip to Window Movie Maker if you have avi or other compatible file format.
1) Before using Max DVD to AVI Converter, install XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe first
2) Install Max DVD to AVI Converter and run it
3) Open file and look for the file you need to convert (E.G: VTS_02_1.VOB ...a part of the files in my dvd disc)
4) Click TARGET and save the file to desktop
5) Click RUN
6) Choose <<>> and XviD MPEG-4 Codec

7) Click OK and wait till process finish

Windows Movie Maker
------------------------
1) Open Windows Movie Maker
2) Go to File > Import into Collections...
3) Look for the avi file you want to use (E.G: the avi file you had just converted)
4) Import the avi file you selected
5) Click and drag the file to the Video timeline (The one that shows "Drag media to the timeline to begin making a movie)
6) Play the file
7) If you want to remove extra part of the file you don't want, pause the play and click split (The split button is second for far right of the view movie screen) and the file will split into 2 parts.
8) Choose the part that you want to remove, right click and choose delete (or remove)

9) In the Movie Tasks box, under "Finish Movie", click "Save to my computer"
10) Name it test and save to desktop
11) Choose "Other settings: DV-AVI (NTSC) and click Next

12) Wait for the process to finish (You can close it after finish. Save changes to the project is optional)

Notepad
---------
1) Open Notepad
2) Type these lines without any typo error (very important)
First line: DirectShowSource("test.avi")
Second line: lanczosresize(480,272)
Third line: changefps(29.97)
3) Save it as test.AVS (Capital letter A V S), save as type "All Files"
(Save it to desktop)

Virtual Dub Mod
-----------------
1) Open Virtual Dub Mod
2) File > Open video file...Open "test.AVS"
3) Stream > Stream list
4) Click Save WAV
5) Name it test and save it
Important: There is a check box at the bottom of the Save WAV File window. Uncheck the "Don't run this job now; add it to job control so I can run it in batch mode"
6) Wait for the process to finish and it will return back to "Available streams" window again

7) Click Disable and then click OK
8) File > Save As...
9) Name it test2 and click save (Wait for the process to finish).
In the destop, you will have: test.avi, test.AVS, test.wav & test2.avi

Wav Editor (Sound Forge 8.0d)
----------------------------------
1) Open Sound Forge 8.0d
2) Open the file "test.wav" you created earlier using Virtual Dub Mod
3) At the bottom of the screen, you will see the sample rate is 48,000 Hz. Right click and change to 44,100 Hz (If you use your own wave editor, you should change the frequency to 44,100 Hz)

4) Save the file and close

UMD Stream Composer
-------------------------
1) Open UMD Stream Composer
2) Click New > Clip name: test (or anyname you like) & Project name: work (or anyname you like) and click next
3) Check Box: Tick PSP Movie Format (for game) and click Finish
4) Click Video Source > Open > Open "test2.avi" (in desktop). Click OK
5) Click Audio Source > Open > Open "test.wav" (in desktop). Click OK
6) Click Run(R) > "Encode + Multiplex" and wait for the process to finish
7) Click Close and exit the program (Need not save the project)

PMF Creater
-------------
1) Open PMF Creater
2) Path of your MPS: click browse and go to My Documents > UmdStreamComposer > MuxWork > work > 00001 > select 00001.MPS and click Open

3) Save As: click browse and type: (a) intro - if you want to use in cintro; or b) gameboot - if you want to save as gameboot *
4) Total time: Take note of the duration of "test2.avi" and "test.wav" (E.G: my test2.avi is 14 seconds while test.wav is 15 seconds). Enter time in between the shortest and the longest seconds. I enter 15 (Trial & Error - personal preference but should not be way below or over)

5) Click convert and wait for a while.
6) Click OK and exit program

Voila...You have just created a new intro/gameboot file.

* You can also use the above steps to make gameboot.pmf. Please limit the gameboot.pmf to maximum 4 seconds when creating test.avi. Why? Coz the gameboot only play for 4 seconds. If the file created extreamely long, you might ended up having blank white gameboot without sound.

* Sometime it may get jerky at the end of the gameboot play if u use exactly 4 seconds max, but not always the case. So recommended you make roughly around 3.5 - 3.8 seconds.

Below are the necessary tools for you to work with and some samples I made.

Edit: To make C-intro work, copy the PSP folder from the extract and enable Autorun Eboot from Recovery menu. Put the intro.pmf you have created into ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/INTRO folder. Cheers !

This is a 3.xx+ kernel app to display Tachyon, Baryon and Pommel version numbers of your PSP's motherboard.
It also displays the PSP model (TA-079, TA-081, etc.) based on this data.

Just copy the PSPident folder to your GAME/GAME3XX folder and run it. If you want, it will also run in the 1.50 kernel.

NOTE: If your PSP is detected as a TA-085 v2, it is the newest Slim revision which cannot write to the battery serial and therefore cannot be used to create a Pandora battery!

Information about the numbers printed:
Kernel version - internal version of the current kernel you are running the app on (could be either 1.50 or 3.xx if you're using OE/M33)
Tachyon - this seems to be the version of the chip which contains the CPU, ME and GPU.
Baryon - this is the version number of your PSP's Syscon (system control) chip
Pommel - the PSP's GPIO/watchdog which handles system events and shuts down in the event of a crash
Kirk - the PSP's main decryption/verification chip
Spock - secondary decryption chip, only used to decrypt data from the UMD discs

Note: these are internal SCE names for these devices, not names I made up xD

Converting ISOs:

PrometeusPro gives you 4 options:

Converting ISOs is as easy as starting up the program.

First, you decide what you want to convert your ISO too (CSO or DAX).

For this tutorial i am going to convert Tony Hawks Underground 2 - Remix to CSO

Just hit the open button and select the ISO you want convert (If you dont have one, you can download a program to make your own HERE or you can GOOGLE THEM).

Now it should show that when it is done converting it will be Tony Hawk Underground 2 - Remix.cso

Now all you have to do is hit compress, and wait.

That's it!

Converting to DAX or back to ISO is just as easy. Just follow the same steps with a different mode selected.

How to convert a PSX game to PSP:

For this tutorial i will be converting tomb raider.

Insert the PSX game into your mac. It should come up like this (with a different # of course):

Open up PrometeusPro and select "PSX -> PSP". Then press the "Rip" button. It will ask you what you want the name of the game to be and where you want to save it.

While it is ripping the disc, the memory stick light on the psp starts to blink (i personally like that little touch).

While your PSX game is ripping, take this time to find or make an icon, background, sound, icon video, and a title image. Make sure the images are PNG files.

I will be using these images:

Background

480x272 pixels

Icon

140x80 pixels

Title

310x180 pixels

Now the game should be done ripping, and you should get this message:

Click ok and get ready for the final steps.

If you do not see your game in the PSX image box like this:

Click open and select "your games name".bin

Now it's time to add the images (and sound/video files if you have them).

Just click the open button next to the box of the image you want to add.

It should end up looking something like this:

If you want to save the final eboot to a different destination you can change that by hitting the save button next to the "save as" box.

Once you have the images the way you want, hit start.

How to create a Pandora Battery and Slim Mem Stick WITHOUT a Phat PSP

I got a few PM's asking if this can be done and if so how did I do it? Yes it works as my Slim PSP is now running on M33 3.71 and I love it. This was also upgraded on Sony Official firmware 3.6, not sure if it will work if you updated to Sony official 3.71.

First make your pandora battery without Phat PSP.

I went to WalMart and purchased a 3.6v 2200mAh battery (since this is the only one they had) about 37 bucks. First open the battery with small flat head screw driver by prying around the battery to snap it open. Becareful around the end that makes contact in the PSP as its directly connected to the pcb board on top of battery.

The top part of the battery should come off, take your time to make sure not to damage pcb at top and battery cells inside.

The newer batteries and the 2200mAh has a smaller pcb at the top then the forum at benheck forums depict but it has the same chip that needs to be altered. It has a C04 printed next to it on the pcb. I heated mine up with a soldering iron then lifted it with a tip of a razor blade, then removed it completely from the ic chip as I dont intend to use it as a normal battery. You may solder the leg back and use it as normal battery if you wish.

The battery is now a Pandora Battery (click BenHeck link for info on how it works). To verify this just pop it into slim psp without memory stick and see if power lights up green if so its working.

Making the Slim Magic Memory Stick

I used the Sony Pro Duo 1gig stick that came with my Daxter pack. You can use any Pro Duo as long as its under 4 gig, 256/512/1 gigs work great. I won't go into detail on fake Pro-Duo's etc.. just make sure its a genuine pro-duo stick.

You will need to use a Pandora GUI there is a couple out there this is the one I used.

Pandoras GUI 1.5 Thread

I ran the GUI with my Memory Stick reader. If you are doing this with your PSP you will need to remove the stick and reboot the PSP after each step.

Make sure you're on the Pandoras Battery Tab as shown in picture

First load the 1.5 firmware either on your hard drive or download it with direct link in GUI.

Make sure your PSP Memory stick drive letter is selected. Mine was H: but yours might be different. Click PSP/GAME since your psp slim is on standard sony firmware.

Format the Memory Stick with step 1 on GUI.

Copy pandora box files to Memory Stick.

Step 3 on GUI is not required as this runs pandora battery installer on phat psp and you already have a hardware modded battery.

Last write IPL to memory stick. This puts the IPL and makes the memory stick bootable when psp goes into service mode.

Next click on the Slim and Lite tab at top.

Load 3.40 and 3.50 firmware updates. Either from hard drive again or direct downloads.

Stage 1 should be set if you just performed Pandoras Battery tab section. If not make sure the PSP drive letter is set on Pandora Battery tab.

Press the copy files button on stage 2. This copies the m33 3.6 firmware to your memory stick. This will put them in the correct directories and names for you.

Stage 3 you cannot run since you will need a phat psp to copy these required files over. This is what had me stumped for a while. When I tried to boot the psp with the memory stick made with this GUI and the pandora battery it would go green but the memory stick would not be accessed. You will need to get the kd and registry directories from someone who has made a Slim magic memory stick. I asked around and got these and this was what was missing, I am sure if you 'google' or ask nicely someone will send these too you.

These are the necessary .prx .dregs etc.. that need to be accessed on boot up. The GUIs do not create these, I tried a few other GUIs as well none of them did. After I just copied these to the root of my memory stick, I replaced the pandora battery in the slim and WHOLA the memory stick was accessed and the psp shut down after a few seconds. You will not see anything on your screen as the 1.5 kernel does not display on new slim screen. The only way you can tell its working is orange MS access light and green light turning off. Then its safe to replace your battery with a standard one and reboot psp.

Enjoy your home brew. This is my first attempt to describe how to get this working so there may be parts I need to edit to describe better, but it drove me nuts for 8 hours to figure how to get a slim flashed with M33 firmware without a Phat PSP. With the hardware mod battery, it was now possible to flash without a Phat psp with just a few files and programs.

Dark Alex's Time Machine Guide

I was having a lot of problems during the install of Dark Alex's Time Machine so I created an easy to install guide for N00bs. I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

For everyone that doesn't know, Dark Alex's Time Machine is a program to load previous firmwares and custom firmwares from memory stick. This means you can even load 1.50 on a PSP Slim, which is amazing!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ORIGINAL 1.50 FIRMWARE CANNOT RUN ON PSP SLIM, ONLY 1.50+3.40hw CAN RUN ON PSP SLIM.

YOU MUST UPDATE TO THE LATEST 3.90-2 M33 BEFORE USE ON THE PSP SLIM. The PSP won't be able to run 1.50+3.40hw if you don't update.

Also, you must have a Pandora's battery before using Time Machine. If you don't have one, an easy to follow guide to create it can be found

First download the Time Machine package that I uploaded. It has EVERYTHING you need including:

The Time Machine Setup Files
150.pbp (The 1.50 Firmware Eboot)
340.pbp (The 3.40 Firmware Eboot)
3.60 PSAR (The 3.60 Dump that uses the PSAR format)
and
Msipl.bin. (The IPL file from when you make a Pandora's Battery)

So once you download the package, erase your whole memory stick (Backup your game saves first!) then put everything from the package to your memory stick. If done correctly, you will see a PSP folder, 1.50 PBP 3.40 PBP 3.60 PSAR and MSIPL.BIN on the root of your memory stick.

Now, go on your PSP and go to GAME, then MEMORY STICK. You will see "Time Machine".

Once you click it, a menu will come up. Click the first option "Install IPLOADER". This will install some IPL's on your PSP. Once it is done, press X to return to the install menu.

Then click the second option (Convert pandora IPL into TimeMachine format). If you have a MSIPL.BIN on the root of your memory stick, (which you should since it is in the package), it will successfully install. Then press X to return to the install menu.

Now, you have FOUR options. You can either install 1.50 for PHAT PSP, 1.50+3.40 hw for SLIM or PHAT, 3.40 OE, or 3.60 M33 firmware For PSP SLIM.
If you have a SLIM, you must install 1.50+3.40 hw, NOT the regular 1.50.

1) If you are installing 1.50 (FOR PSP FAT ONLY), go to that option and press X. Once installed, you can press X to go back to the installer. Then, click EXIT.

2) For installing 1.50+3.40 hw (FOR PSP SLIM OR FAT), go down to that option in the installer and press X. This will take a while, and once it is done, you can press x to exit to the installer. You can then press EXIT.

3) For installing 3.40 OE (FOR PSP FAT), you must go down to "Install 3.40 OE" in the installer, and press X. Once the installer finishes, press X to return to the installer menu. Then click EXIT.

4) For installing 3.60 M33 (FOR PSP SLIM ONLY) go to "Install 3.60" in the installer, and press X. Once the installer finishes, press X to return to the installer menu. Then click EXIT.

NOW, TAKE OUT YOUR REGULAR BATTERY AND INSERT YOUR PANDORA'S BATTERY. YOUR PSP SHOULD START UP WITH YOUR REGULAR FIRMWARE

Hold your PSP power button for about 3 seconds and your PSP will turn off.

FOR STARTING 1.50+3.40 HW FIRMWARE - Hold down CIRCLE and push up the power button. If done correctly, you will start up 1.50+3.40hw firmware.

FOR STARTING 1.50 FIRMWARE - Hold down X and push up the power button. If done correctly, you will start the 1.50 firmware.

FOR STARTING 3.40 OE FIRMWARE - Hold down TRIANGLE and push up the power button. If done correctly, you will start the 3.40 OE firmware.

FOR STARTING 3.60 M33 FIRMWARE - Hold down SQUARE and push up the power button. If done correctly, you will start 3.60 M33 firmware.

If you don't hold any button when you start your PSP, you will start up your regular firmware. Any time you want to start 1.50 or 1.50+3.40hw or 3.40 OE or 3.60 M33 just hold the appropriate button (X, Circle, Triangle, or Square) and push the power button.

Q: When I hold X, Circle, Square, or Triangle and push the power button, I just start my regular firmware!!
A: Make sure you installed everything right. If it is, make sure you HOLD the power button to completely turn off your PSP, then hold the appropriate button and push the power button.

Q: The setup gives me an error that 150/340 PBP is missing!
A: Make sure the 150.PBP and 340.PBP are on the ROOT of your memory stick. That means you should see those files and the PSP folder.

Q: Do I have to have a Pandora's battery to boot 1.50/1.50+3.40hw/3.40 OE/3.60 M33?
A: YES. Using a regular battery will not allow you to boot anything except your regular firmware.

Q: When I look at the version, it says 1.50 even though I installed 1.50+3.40hw!
A: No matter what you install, 1.50 or 1.50+3.40hw it will show up as 1.50. Please note that 1.50+3.50hw is the same thing as 1.50 firmware except it is compatible with PSP Slim and Phat.

Q: When I am on 1.50 or 1.50+3.40hw Firmware, and I start a game, the PSP logo gets all purplish!
A:This is OK, it will not intefere with anything. Hopefully Dark Alex with fix this with the next release

Q: Can I install two firmwares, like 1.50 and 3.40 OE, on the same PSP?
A: Yes you can. Once you install both of them you can press the appropriate key to start that firmware.

Q: The setup tells me my PSAR file is the wrong size!
A: Use the one in my package and you shouldn't have any problem.

Unbrick/Downgrade your PSP with Pandora Unbricker

OK, I will write this tut, I intentionally bricked my M33 PSP to test this (it also has a UP Mod Chip just in case it didn't work) but it did work

For those new to the PSP hacking scene, this little app can restore your PSP to a limited version of Firmware 1.50 (Think of Firmwares as Operating Systems of the PSP much like PC has Windows, like Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and such), but it will still allow you to update to any OE, M33 Custom Firmwares and such

For those that do have a Custom FM that got bricked, and cannot get into the Recovery Menu, then this little App of Joy is for you, no need to throw your PSP in anger, use it as a expensive paper weight and such

*This can be also used as a universal downgrader *

Before you start any of this, put the msinst, mspformat, folders in you C Drive (HDD) where you see Program Files, WINDOWS, folders and such, you will need to put those right there for the upcoming command prompts you will need to use

Ok, here are the basics of what you will need in order for this to work

1.) You will need a Spare PSP Battery (use Official Sony PSP Battery, works the best), this is needed because according to the Read-ME file, its used to turn it into the "Magic Battery", but you can use your own, *BUT*, make sure you back up the files when you create it to turn it back into a normal battery

2.) You will need a spare Memory Stick Pro Duo as the regualr Memory Stick Duo (like the 32 MB) will not work, if you have only one, back everything up from it because you will need to format the Memory Stick and that wipes everything from the Memory Stick, or if you do have a spare one, then its best to have a 256 or above, but no larger than a 4 gig Memory Stick

3A.) You will need another PSP that is working that has FM 1.50 or any Custom FM, if you do not have a Spare working PSP, then ask a buddy, you will need this Spare PSP with those FM mentioned because you will need to run the "Installer" Eboot (remember, only 1.50 and any Custom FM will only Boot Eboots that are not from Sony, like you would with Homebrew) and if it is a Custom FM, make sure you switch it to the 1.50 kernel in the Recovery Menu

3B.) If you do not have access to a working 1.50 PSP/Custom Firmware PSP, then scroll the the bottom of this tut to see the instructions for it

*NOTE* If you have a fat PSP with 3.71M33, make sure to have the 1.50 plugin first before you set the kernel to 1.50 in the Recovery Menu

****Installation and Usage Instructions****

OK, I will now go through he Installation Instructions and will try and be clear as possible, its really easy though, no big terms

1.) First, Connect the working 1.50/Custom Fm PSP under the 1.50 Kernel to the Computer Via USB Cable

2.) *IMPORTANT* if you have only 1 Memory Stick Pro Duo (remember, only Memory Stick Pro Duos will work for this) then back everything up as the reason, you will need to format it and thus, will wipe out everything from your Memory Stick, if you have a spare 256 and above, then Format it in the PSP with the PSP's Format Utility (Settings>System Settings>Format Memory Stick) and Format the Memory Stick because this Memory Stick you are about to use will be the "Magic Memory Stick"

3.) When you Finish Formating the Memory Stick inside the PSP, go to the USb Connection in the PSP to connect the PSP to the Computer

4.) Ok, this gets a little difficult here, I will do my best to say it easy, ok now that your PSP is connected to your Computer, In Windows, select Start>Run>CMD and then open the Command Prompt

5.) Once you have Command Prompt open, then go to "MY Computer" in the Start Menu and look at what drive your PSP is under, for Example, my PSP is known as Removable Drive J: in my computer, so it can be different on any computer, so I will use J for this tut

6.) Now that you got your PSP drive location, go to the Command Prompt, and Type this Exactly like I do, but I will be using my drive letter for this tut, so my PSP drive is J, but remember to put the drive number of your PSP instead of J, and when you type the command in the Command Prompt, make sure to have a space between mspformat and your drive letter, and then when you open the Command Prompt, you should see sumthing similar to this depending what your computer name is and such

7.) Now once you hit enter after typing that command, you will get this prompt or something similar

10.) After Formating your Memory Stick, then disconnect USB Mode in the PSP and once you do that, take the Memory Stick out and reinsert it into the PSP (*Note* all this still applies to a good working 1.50 PSP or Custom FM PSP) and after you reinsert the Memory Stick, go to USB Mode once more to connect to the Computer

11.) On your PSP, make sure you have the PSP folder and inside that Folder, you have GAME and GAME150 (GAME150 if you are using a CF PSP), if they are not there, then make them

12.) Once you make them, then copy the folders Battery and Battery% in the GAME folder if you are using a 1.50 PSP, or the GAME150 if you are using a Custom FM (this still applies to the working PSP you are using to generate this files needed), and after all the file transfers, exit USB Mode

13.) This is really the important part, now choose which battery you will using as the "Magic battery" and insert that battery you will be using for the Magic Battery

14.) Once you choose the Magic Battery you are using, then make sure you have those folders (Battery, Battery%) in their correct places, then exit USB Mode and go the the GAME Icon on the XMB of the working PSP, and run the "Pandora's Battery Creator" Eboot file like you would with any other Homebrew game, app and such in the PSP

15.) ***OPTIONAL - But Very Important *** within the app, Press Triangle to back up the contents of your battery's flash into a file on you memory stick. The program will automatically exit. Run "Pandora's Battery Creator" one more time. *Note:* This step is REQUIRED if you want to make that Magic Battery back to a normal battery, its optional if you want to keep that battery as a Magic Battery for good, just label it so you won't confuse it with your normal PSP batteries

16.) After you do that above optional step, then run "Pandora's Battery Creator" again, but this time, press X to make your Battery into a Magic Battery, after that, the program will exit again for you

17.) Go to USB Mode again

18.) Download and Copy the Original FM 1.50 Update (it is found in the download section of this site) and put it in the Root of the Memory Stick, and rename it to UPDATE.PBP and make sure its the Eboot file, not in a folder, just the Update itself on the Root (Root means its the top most part of your PSP where you see the PSP Folder)

19.) After that, then get the folder called "Installer" and "Installer%" and put them according to what FM you got (for FM 1.50, put them in the GAME folder, for Custom FM, put them in the GAME150 folder)

20.) After you put those folders in the correct places, then exit USB Mode

21.) Once out of USB Mode, then go to your GAME Icon of your PSP XMB and run the "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer" like you do with regualr Homebrew and such

22.) Once in the app, press X to unpack the 1.50 firmware files into their correct places. The program will exit for you. If this step fails, go back into USB mode and rename "UPDATE.PBP" to just "UPDATE", then try again.

23.) Once finished with the above step, then go back to USB Mode and look at your Memory Stick Root, you should see the UPDATE.PBP/UPDATE (this applies to whichever way you named the update file) and the PSP folder, and now you should see another file called "msipl.bin"

24.) Once in USB Mode, copy "msipl.bin" into the folder called "msinst" that was extracted from the ZIP file that you downloaded

25.) Go back to the Command Prompt and then type the location of where you folder called msinst.bin is located

26.) After that, type this (I will be using my PSP drive in this example), and remember to put the drive number of your PSP and have space between msinst, your drive letter and msipl.bin, it should look something like this, and once again, you will need to get to that other folder needed in the next step, type this command to get there

29.)you should now see a prompt like this

30.) that prompt above means you successfully created a Magic Memory Stick

31.)Now comes the easy part, its time to Unbrick your PSP

32.) Now make sure you have the 1.50 Update renamed to UPDATE.PBP just like mentioned earlier in the Root of the "Magic Memory Stick"

33.) Make sure the "Magic Memory Stick" is inserted into the bricked PSP

34.) Insert the "Magic Battery" into your bricked PSP, and you should see all the wifi, power lights and such turn on shortly and a Menu appears similar to the Recovery Menu of a Custom FM

35.) After that, press X and it should search for your Update you put in the Root, if it does, then you will get to another menu

36.) once in that menu, press X to begin reflashing the 1.50 Update to your bricked PSP

37.) Wait and once it is finished, WOOOOOT, you now have unbricked your PSP, *BUT*, read the below statement from the Read-ME file

38.) Well if you had only 1 Memory Stick Pro Duo, then you can simply format it with the PSP's Format utility and it will be used as a normal Memory Stick Pro Duo and transfer all your files you backed up earlier to their right locations, or if it is a spare Memory Stick Pro Duo, then put it away for future uses so you won't have to go through all of this to make a"Magic Memory Stick", the same applies if you have a spare battery that you want to leave it as a "Magic Battery", I did that, I have a spare Memory Stick Pro Duo and a spare PSP Battery and I left them as "Magic Battery" and "Magic Memory Stick Pro Duo" for future use, I would suggest the same if you have spare of these items, and make sure to label them apart from your regular Memory Stick and PSP Battery beacuse "Magic Memory Stick Pro Duo" and "Magic Battery" will not work on a regular PSP, they will work as unbrickers, no matter what you do, if you have one, its important to back you your battery information if you want to use that battery as a regular battery again

39.) Once again, thanx to those hard working PSP hackers that make all of this possible

 subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or
 recovery apps) will load.

STEP 2:

Next, we need to locate a certain chip. The chip has the model number S93C56 printed on it. We are going to need to desolder pin 5 and lift it off of the board. Here is a magnified view of the board, which shows where the chip is and which pin needs to be lifted.

STEP 3:

EDIT: If you are not confident in your soldering skills, have a less than steady hand or have a larger-than-optimal sized tip, please desolder the cell pack from the battery first. If you make contact between pins 5 and 6 then you will short ground to +3.6VDC! Not good! When desoldering the cell, only keep the iron on long enough to melt the solder. If you can, use a higher wattage iron so that the tip will be hotter, but you won't transfer as much heat to the cell pack. Remember that heat + Li-Ion battery = large explosion (t3h sux0r5, unless you get in on video. Twisted Evil Seriously though, this operation is not for the faint hearted, and should definitely not be your first soldering experience. I recommend trying your hand on lifting the pins on an N64 CPU chip. Surely you have a couple killed N64 mobos laying around. Razz)

Now is actually desoldering the pin. There are a few ways you could do this, but I think my method is the best because its less likely to damage components near by. Use an Xacto knife with a sharp tip and try to put it underneath the pin. Get somebody to hold a soldering iron (WITH A VERY FINE CONICAL TIP!) on the pin. When the solder melts you can pop the pin up with the knife. Be sure not to hold the iron on the board too long to avoid the lithium battery from getting too hot and exploding. When your done it will look something like this .

STEP 4:

Finally, close the battery's casing. Use some Krazy Glue to keep it closed, or just use electrical tape around the edges like I did. I don't actually recommend the electrical tape as it makes the battery very snug in the compartment and it takes a bit of force to get it out. You can use the battery just like a regular Pandora's battery. As for getting the Memory Stick files, I can tell you that they are out there and you can find them after a bit of Googling. However, I can't tell you exactly where to find them as they contain copyrighted Sony code, and sharing them is illegal.

How does this work?

The pin that we just lifted was actually the ground pin of the EEPROM. Removing this pin effectively shuts off the EEPROM. When the microcontroller inside the battery tries to read the EEPROM, it will think the EEPROM contains all 1s (in binary). This is because of the pull-up resistors on the data lines. So the microcontroller returns a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF to the PSP, which then goes into service mode.

Now, this is for all the people who want to install custom firmware on their brand new Slim, and for those having a hard time installing DCv3. Asking how to get CFW is a question that gets too much around here. So, here is just a guide so you know what to do.

Pick these up at your local download spot

You can run DCv4 (unbricker, not the installer) on any PSP regardless of firmware, mobo, whatever. However, the installer and this guide will require you to have a HEN PSP. (This means you have to be on any 2xx or 3xx custom firmware or be able to launch HEN on 2.71, 3.03, 3.50, etc. Also, you will need a Pandora battery.

1)This will require you to reformat/repartition your MS. Backup any data you want to keep.

2)Extract the Pandora Installer, and move the 'pan3xx' folder to X:/PSP/GAME. Launch it from the XMB.

2a)Extract the 1.50 EBOOT to the root of your MS. Rename it to 'UPDATE.PBP'. This is necessary. If you don't do this step, Hellcat's Installer will fail to work for you..

3)When it loads, press R + X to reformat. Press L + R + X to confirm the reformat, and let it run. Once it is done, press X to shutdown and manually reboot.

4)Once the PSP reboots, put it in USB Mode, and make a 'PSP' folder on the root, and a sub-folder that is named 'GAME' within the PSP folder.

5)Extract DCv3, and move the 'despertar_cementerio' folder to X:/PSP/GAME.

6)Extract the update eboots, and rename them to '380.PBP', '150.PBP', and '340.PBP' respectively. Move all 3 files to the root of your memory stick.

6a)Also, make sure you have 2 copies of the 1.50 UPDATE. One must be named '150.PBP', and the other must be named 'UPDATE.PBP'.

7)Disable USB Mode, and launch the DCv4 installer from GAME > MemoryStick.

8)Once DCv4 loads, you will have to press X to begin installation. Give it a while, and it will boot back to XMB when finished.

9)*SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU HAVE A PANDORA BATTERY* Go back to GAME>MemoryStick, and launch the Pandora Installer. Press R + 0 to backup the serial, and then press 0 to convert your battery to Pandora.

10)When it is done, press L + X to install the ipl. You now have a JiKick Battery, and Magic Stick with DCv3 on it.

Using this

DCv4 upgrades your PSP to 3.80 M33-5 from any previous firmware version. This can also be used an unbricker.

1)To start DCv4, insert JiKick battery, and DCv3 Magic Stick. It should auto-boot.

2)Once the menu boots, press X to install 3.80 M33. Let DCv4 work. When it is finished, press X to shutdown PSP.

3)If you have a normal battery, and normal MS, put them in now. If not, take out battery, and Magic Stick, and then insert the charger.

4)Hold R and power on. You should boot into recovery. Go down to Advanced, and press X. From there, go to Format flash1 and reset settings, and press X.

5)Once the PSP reboots, you will get a BSOD error. Press 0 to fix this. The PSP will reboot, but it will take a long time.

6)The PSP will eventually reboot, and you will have to reset your settings. Set them, and you will go to the XMB.

7)If you are a Phat user, download the 1.50 Kernel Addon, and the 1.50 UPDATE This is optional.

Create a new directory in X:/PSP/GAME. Call it anything you want except for UPDATE!. Rename the 1.50 UPDATE to '150.PBP' and place it on the root of your memory stick. Disable USB Mode, and execute from GAME>MemoryStick. Read what's needed and press X to install.

8)If you are unbricking a PSP that has downloaded content from the Playstation Network, you will have to do the following to make it work again:

If you PSP Slim is 3.71 and above, use this tut to make the required items for use on flashing the the Slim to 3.71M33 and above

1.) ok, first, you will need to have a working 1.50/CF PSP set to 1.50 Kernel to run the Pandora battery maker and Installer, follow this tut, and after you are finished with this tut, then come back to this one

2.) *Important* after creating the Pandora Battery and Memory Stick Pro Duo, leave it alone, do not delete any files, run any apps, you need these as the M33 Installer modifies the Memory Stick Pro Duo files to work on a Slim PSP instead of installing 1.50 like on a regular bricked PSP and such

3.) Now that you have created the Pandora Battery and Memory Stick Pro Duo, go into USB Mode

4.) Copy the pandora_slim and pandora_slim% in the GAME folder if yu are using a 1.50 PSP or GAME150 if you are using any CF that is set to the 1.50 Kernel

5.) Download the 3.40 and the 3.50 Update from our download section of this site, and in USB Mode, rename them to 340.PBP and 350.PBP and copy those two updates in the pandora_slim folder

6.) Now that you have those folders/Updates in place, exit USB Mode and then go to the Game icon in the XMB of the PSP

7.) Select Pandora Slim PSP Installer this time around and once in the app, press X to start the programs job, it will write the files for you and will exit for you, so please wait

8.) Once done with the Slim installer, now comes to time to flash M33 to your new PSP Slim

9.) put the Pandora Memory Stick Pro Duo in your PSP Slim and the power cable connected to the PSP and then, put the Pandora Battery into the PSP Slim

10.) The PSP Slim will turn on by itself, do not be alarmed when you see a blank screen, thats normal since the 1.50 Kernel does not work on the PSP Slim as of this time (Hope this comes soon)

11.) After doing the above step, simply press X to Install M33, but like said before, the screen will be blank all the time of the install, but you can hint of what is going on by looking at the light for the memory stick blinking

12.) It only takes a few seconds to install M33 because it only has to install a few PRX's to make the 3.60 into a 3.60 M33 version, so be patient (like look the other way for a few seconds, eat a chip, take a sip of what ever you are drinking, you get the idea )

13.) After it installs the 3.60 M33, the PSP will shut off for you, now take out the Pandora Battery and put your regular PSP Slim battery in and boot it up, WOOOT!!!! you got 3.60 M33

14.) now, unplug the power cord from the PSP Slim and connect it to your fat 1.50/CF PSP set in 1.50 Kernel and then turn it on without the battery in it yet

15.) when the fat PSP is on, then insert the Pandora Battery in and then run the Pandora Battery Maker and press Square to restore that battery into a regular battery, the program will exit for you

16.) you are done now and now have a PSP Slim that rocks cuz it has M33 in it

17.) From here onward, If you want to Install 3.71 M33, make sure you first have successfully installed 3.60 M33 on your Slim

18.) Now that you have 3.60 M33 Installed, simply use this easy Installer, or for those that want to to it manually, then get the 3.71 M33 Installer from this site's Download section, and make a folder called UPDATE inside the GAME folder, and then put the files in there, and then get the the 3.71 Official Update and rename it to 371.PBP and put it inside the UPDATE Folder with the 3.71 M33 Install files

19.) Now you are ready to Install 3.71/3.80/3.90M33 (Depending on which CF you choose to install), BUT, Connect your Power cord, and also, be CAREFUL! this is like the Official Update, you must have your power cord connected at all times, now make sure your battery is over 78% charged since the Installer works and looks like the Official Sony Installer, so don't be Alarmed when you see the Official Sony Installer, thats normal, and simply follow the instructions on the Menu and Install the Update, and when it is finished installing DO NOT power the PSP off by yourself, you will end up having a brick!, so press X to reboot the PSP and you are good

Part 1- Flashing themes on 3.90/3.80/3.71 M33

Important Note:

Before you flash any files, make sure you have backed up flash0 and upgraded to 3.71 M33-2 or later, as you will corrupt flash0 with previous releases.

Inadvertently writing incorrect RCOs or PRXs to flash0 will result in a semi-brick.

Never touch the contents of the KD, KM or the Podule Folder. Inadvertently deleting or modifying files from these folders will result in a full brick.

If this is your first time flashing files on 3.71/3.80/3.90 M33:

In Windows, go to:

Tools --> Folder Options --> View:

Make sure show hidden files and folders is ticked, and hide protected operating files is unticked:

Here are the steps for backing up flash0:

The first thing you want to do is to create a folder on your computer, and name it: flash0

Connect your PSP through USB to your computer. Hold up on the power switch to shut your PSP down. While holding the right trigger, turn your PSP back on to enter recovery mode.

Click on Advanced, then click on Toggle USB (flash0).

On your computer, click on: Open folder to view files in Windows Explorer

A new window will open, showing you all of the folders in flash0:

Copy the entire contents of flash0 from your PSP, and Paste it into the flash0 folder you created on your computer.

Remember to COPY and PASTE the files to your computer.

If you decide you only want to install certain parts of the theme,

Found at flash0: font:

1. ltn0.pgf - This is the font that displays in the XMB and Web browser.

Before writing a custom theme to flash0, you are going to have to free up some flash space.

Step 1:

Open your font folder in flash0:

Copy and paste ltn0.pgf to your desktop.

Rename it to gb3s1518.bwfon

Drag gb3s1518.bwfon back into the font folder overwriting the original.

Step 2:

Dummying or deleting the dic folder. Delete the folder entirely,
Or open each file with notepad, delete the contents and put a 0:

Completing these two steps will free up enough flash space to install your custom theme.

If you are having problems or prefer not to complete the above process yourself, here's the dic folder (dummied) and gb3s1518.bwfon (dummied). Just copy and paste gb3s1518.bwfon into the font folder on your psp, and copy and paste the contents of the dic folder into the dic folder on your psp:

Writing the custom theme to flash0:

Important Note: When replacing RCO and PRX, NEVER delete the files from your PSP's flash0. Always copy and paste the files to there proper folders and confirm overwrite.

Most of the theme packs you download should have the files set up in there proper folders: a vsh folder with subfolders resource and module, and the font folder.

1. Connect your PSP through USB to your computer. Hold up on the power switch to shut your PSP down. While holding the right trigger, turn your PSP back on to enter recovery mode.

2. Click on Advanced, then click on Toggle USB (flash0):

Part 2. Installing 3.71 M33 themes using CXMB.

Important Note:

Before you flash any files, make sure you have backed up flash0 and upgraded to 3.71 M33-2 or later, as you will corrupt flash0 with previous releases.

If the theme you're using requires a custom paf.prx and vshmain.prx you will have to flash them to the module folder at flash0 as these PRXs are not supported while using CXMB 2.5 with 3.71 M33 firmware.

Download CXMB here --> CXMB 2.5 (update_plugin.prx included in module folder)

What do you need?

2. USB Device to connect the MS to your PC(it can be your PSP or a Card reader/writer)
3. Get the following official SONY Updates (1.5, 3.71, 3.80) and rename the files UPDATE.PBP, 371.PBP and 380.PBP respectively.

You don't need a PSP with a custom firmware to use this application. It does everything for you.

The major news about this version are two:
Now homebrews finally get their own ids. The id is made trough hashing of the launched eboot from the game menu. it will have the HBxxxxxxxx format and so it will allow you to catalogue easily and cleanly in your database cheats for different homebrews.
four new test code types which uses adress comparison in place of comparing a fixed value with the value at a particular adress.
The general format is this:

a = adress to the left operand of the test operation
b = adress to the right operand of the test operation
X = test operation to be executed: 4 for equal, 5 for not equal, 6 for less than, 7 for greather than

Y = bits of the operation: 0 = 8bit, 1 = 16bit, 2 = 32bit
Then there is the classical list of fixes and optimizations on cpu clock functions, text reader, and some select cheats menu functions.
Finally a polish translation was added thanks to Bolec and some workaround were applied for some 3.80+ firmware bugs till better ways are found.

I wrote this GUI to help people use Dark Alex's new popstation_md.exe. It allows you to put multiple PSX discs into one eboot. It's very useful for games that don't allow you to save before changing discs, and you might even be able to use it on Monster Rancher to get special monsters.

khuong has now updated popstation_md.exe so that it now supports boot.png. He deserves all the credit for it, cause he did all the hard work.

USAGE
=====

* To use usbhost iso streaming : after executing usbhostfs_pc on the computer,
type "Note + L" on the psp. Note that you must create a folder ISO where you launch usbhostfs_pc
and put your isos inside.

* To use wifi streaming : edit the "pc_ip_address" line in the "cfe.config" file
to match IP address of your desktop PC.
Make sure you can use first network infrastructure connection setting to connect PSP to your desktop PC.
Launch "nethostfs.exe" then on your psp type "Note + L".

* To record an in-game video on psp : On the computer, go to the folder
"windows\remotejoy_gui" then launch "start.bat"
On the PSP, load a game or homebrew, then push the capture button combo (default is NOTE/TRIANGLE).
The psp will hang if you do this before a game save is loaded, best is to do this when you really are in game.
Go back to the computer, in the SDL windows push "c" on your keyboard to start capturing.
Each frames will be saved as bmp in the capture folder. Note that you must have a lot of free space on your hdd,
and this one must work at a descent speed or you may loose some frames.
Now you just have to encode the *.bmps using you favorite encoder (VirtualDub will do the job by loading the first bmp).

* Vsh menu hook : you can set some "vsh menu icons" to load a specified homebrew, take a look at the cfe.config file for
exemples on how to use it.

* For other functions, press "Note + Volume Down" on the PSP to show available commands.

These errors are generated by the hidden updater module sceChkDegeneration, used to detect a patched IdStorage on a TA-082

In order to help you guys out, here's a list of the errors so you can work out what needs to be done to fix your PSP.

DRNFFFFFFD8 = key 0x4 missing
DRNFFFFFFD7 = key 0x4 header is not "n y r B" (in hex: 6E 79 72 42)

DRNFFFFFFCE = key 0x5 missing
DRNFFFFFFCD = key 0x5 header is not "g k l C" (in hex: 67 6B 6C 43)

HOW-TO: Get videos and DVDs onto your Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) for free

This week's How-To is only going to apply to the lucky six or seven of you who've managed to already get your hands on a PlayStation Portable, the rest of you will just have keep this one in mind and come back to it when the PSP comes out here in the States in March. We're going to show you step-by-step how to get video clips on to your PSP without having to spring for any additional software.

When you format a Memory Stick Duo or Pro Duo stick in your Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), you will get a new PSP folder, with sub-folders for "game", "music", "photos", and "savedata". But nothing for videos? What's up with that? Well, it turns out that you need to put MPEG-4 video files in their own special folder, one that's not in the PSP directory, but in the main root directory of the Memory Stick.

Just create a new folder in the root directory named MP_ROOT, and then make a folder called 100MNV01 in there. So your .MP4 files should go into E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01, where E:\ is the drive letter of your Memory Stick. You also need a PC, as the converter software does not work with Macs. This MP_ROOT directory structure is directly cribbed from Sony's UX/VZ Clie PDA series, which also plays MPEG-4 videos. Sony does offer up Image Converter 2.1, but they charge 1000 yen (around $10) for it. We're going to show you how to do it for free.

First, we need to download 3GP Converter, currently in version 0.22 (2.7MB).
Unzip the 3GPC .ZIP file into a directory of your choice, and run setup.exe. You may see a bunch of weird characters, but don't worry, it's set to Japanese by default. Scroll down to the bottom of the 3GP Converter Setup window and select the English radio button, select Customized: MP4, for PSP (Direct, renamed) the then press Apply. This is the setting for conversion of video files to MPEG-4 format that can be played by the PSP, and renamed so your PSP recognizes it (such as M4V31337.MP4). Unfortunately, the PSP currently won't recognize file names such as TheUsualSuspects.MP4 or TheOCSeason2Episode4.MP4.

Now, the 3GP Converter program window is open (if not, you can double-click the 3GP_Converter.exe program to run it). Click the Select button to choose where you want your converted PSP MP4 video files to reside. We just chose C:\3GP_Converter.

The program may ask you to install QuickTime Authoring before being able to convert your video files. A simple click of the Do It Now button will suffice.

The drop down box is what level quality setting you want your MP4 video to have. All outputted videos will have QVGA (320x240) resolution. You can choose from 15 or 29.97 frames per second, with 29.97 fps being a lot smoother. The third item listed in the quality settings is the video bitrate, the higher the bitrate, the better quality your video will turn out, with the highest quality being 1500kbps. The QB# settings appear to be variable bit rate (VBR) settings, where the converter will use a higher bitrate when necessary. The QB4 setting is the lowest quality VBR option, and QB10 the highest quality VBR. Next is the options for audio, choose between Mono or Stereo. The last bitrate is for your audio quality, you can choose from 32kbps (lower quality) to 128kbps (highest quality). The higher quality setting you choose, the slower it will be to convert.

Now drag whatever file you want to convert into MPEG-4 format into the blank area of the program window. Here we chose a Shark Tale trailer, originally in DivX Pro HD format, to convert with the 'QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Stereo/128kbps' setting, the highest quality setting that 3GP supports. When the program is finished converting the video into MP4 format, the program will rename the file to something like M4V04895.MP4.

Now setup the USB connection (or take out your Memory Stick Pro Duo and stick in a reader) on your PSP to copy the video files over. The correct folder name for videos is E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 (where E: is the drive letter of your PSP). Copy your .MP4 video(s) over (the .THM files that 3GP Converter creates are not necessary for playback), and then disconnect the PSP USB connection by pressing the X button.

Scroll over to Video in your PSP menu and select it by pressing the O button. It should list your converted MP4, with title, date, and length of video. Press O again and it will start playing.

There are four screen display modes, which you can choose from by pressing the triangle button. Scroll up to Screen Mode (2nd from left on the top row) and use the O button to scroll between Normal, Zoom, Full Screen, and Original modes. Normal is fine for regular 4:3 show viewing, Zoom gives you a closer view of the center of the video, Full Screen is perfect for 16:9 widescreen videos, and Original looks like it displays the video in a 320x240 pixel format.

With the codec and video expertise of our favorite geek friend, Craig, we tried to convert a video into MPEG-4 format with a 480x272 resolution, which is the native resolution of the PSP LCD. A 480x272 video file should be of higher quality than a stretched 320x240 pixel picture, but unfortunately, all of our attempts failed, no matter what we tried. We would always end up with Incompatible Data or Corrupted Data displayed on our PSP, though it played perfectly on a Windows box.

We came up with the theory that as the PSP uses the same video format as their Clies, and since those play videos just fine Sony didn't want to put in the extra work involved to get native 480x272 resolution MPEG-4 support. We also guessed that any potential UMD movie titles would be shown in the full 480x272 resolution (just as games are in shown in the native screen resolution), but that Sony didn't want to have videos from Memory Sticks (potentially copyright infringing) to be competing with the UMD discs which they would be making money from. In effect, they crippled the video playback capability from Memory Sticks. This is of course, just speculation, but this is Sony that we're talking about here.

Using a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with a 2 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with 2GB of RAM, we processed a few video files for fun. It took 3GP Converter 1:40 for a 18.5MB .WMV (of the Pistons/Pacers fight) to be converted into .MP4 format, with an output file size of 19.8MB for QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Stereo/128kbps, the highest quality available. It took just 48 seconds when we dropped down the quality level to QVGA/15fps/216kbps Mono/32kbps, with a resulting filesize of 3.2MB. There is a noticabe difference in quality, with the lower video bitrate resulting in annoying pixilation (which we hate). If you can spare the space, definitely go for the higher quality.

We still think the holy grail of a portable video player is drag and drop support for all major video formats without any transcoding necessary. Converting video (just like converting MP3s to ATRAC in previous Sony music offerings) is just a pain and should be avoided if at all possible. This current way to put videos on the PSP is also a somewhat of a burden, as the process is more for the hacker type (and we mean hacker as in tinkerer).

Sony has released Image Converter 2.1 (available for 1000yen), which has an iTunes-like drag and drop functionality, converting videos, renaming it, and putting it in the correct directory. We have heard a few reports of the software bloating a video file on conversion (turning a 20MB file into 30MB or bigger for no reason). We have no first-hand experience yet with the Sony software, but the 3GP Converter is quite adequate in its own right, with a host of encoding quality options.

The converted videos using the QVGA/29.97fps/QB10 Stereo/64kbps mode (we assume QB10 is the highest quality variable bitrate mode, as QB4 video was loads worse) looks good in terms of video, but since the audio bitrate is half of the highest quality video's 128kbps, you do notice the difference in audio quality, with the 64kbps audio being more hollow sounding and tinny. The filesize of the QB10 setting was 14.2MB, offering a bit of filesize saving over the 19.8MB of the 1500kbps video quality setting.

We successfully converted Windows Media Player (WMV), MPEG-1/2, DivX, and XviD formats into PSP-capable MP4. Of the various formats we tried, only a Quicktime MOV file failed to be converted by 3GP Converter.

Here's a quick guide to convert parts of a DVD into MPEG-4. You can convert movies into MP4 format, but unfortunately, you will not be able to get a full movie to fit onto a 512MB Memory Stick unless you are willing to take a serious hit on video quality. What can work well is converting TV or anime episodes (30 minute or hour shows) from DVD, but any converting of clips 30 minutes or more will take quite a bit of time. First, decide what part of the DVD you want converted by previewing it in a standalone player or in a Windows DVD player. Write down the corresponding chapters which contain the episode or section you want.

You will need DVD Decrypter. After installing the program and running it, we will need to set the program to IFO Mode, select Mode, then IFO Mode.

You will now see the Input window with VTS and PGC sections. Below that is a checklist of Chapters on the DVD. Check off the chapters you wrote down earlier and then click on Stream Processing. For simplicity, we checked the video stream, one audio stream, and one subtitle stream. Now that we have selected all that we want to rip from the DVD, click on the DVD disc to Hard Drive icon. The time for the ripping process will depend on the speed of your DVD-ROM, but in the meantime, grab Auto Gordian Knot.
We will need Auto Gordian Knot (AG Knot) to convert DVD Decrypter's VOB file into AVI format. After installing the program and some associated programs, we can load it up. In Step 1, select file input, for Input File, put in the VOB file from DVD Decrypter. For output file, choose a filename and location to place it. Select the audio track from the drop down box, and choose subtitle if need. For the output size, choose Custom Size. We got a 166MB VOB file in our 4 minute, 30 second clip from Ali G's Indahouse from DVD Decrypter. So to be safe, we put in a 83MB output filesize, half the size of the original VOB, just to be safe. Then we clicked Advanced Settings and changed the Fixed Width to 320, as the PSP MPEG-4 video format is 320 pixels wide. Now click the Add Job button and the Start button (below Step 4). After conversion, use the above 3GP Converter guide to convert the AVI file from AG Knot into MP4.

Auto Gordian Knot turned the 4.5 minute clip into an 43.8MB AVI file. Using 3GP Converter, we converted the AVI file into a MPEG-4 file with a filesize of 54.7MB using the highest quality setting (QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Stereo/128kbps). Thus, if you had a 90 minute movie, and used the the same settings we did to convert to to AVI then to MP4, you would have the whole movie in 1100MB, which, unfortunately, is larger than the largest Memory Stick Duo currently available.

Using the lowest quality video setting (QVGA/15fps/216kbps Stereo/64kbps) produced a MP4 file of just 9.6MB, meaning 90 minutes of it would fit in around 192MB. Unfortunately, we can't stand the choppiness nor graininess. So we need to find a middle ground, the 29.97fps/768kbps mode produces a 30.2MB video (around 600MB for a 90 min movie). It's pretty good and the lowest quality that we would accept with our discerning eyes, but still too big to fit in a whole movie onto a 512MB stick, though it would fit fine for an hour long TV episode.

So we stepped it down a notch and tried 15fps and 384kbps, the highest video bitrate for 15fps. The converted MP4 was just 15MB, which would make a 90 minute movie 300MB, and thus fit on our 512MB Sandisk Duo card. The video is expectedly a bit choppy, but it's okay if you're not as nitpicky about video as we are. The audio quality (64kbps) is acceptable as well.

Depending on your video tastes and Memory Stick Duo capacity, you can squeeze an excellent hour of video (at 29.97fps) into a size under 512MB, or up to two hours using 15fps. Even though the conversion program converts files to 320x240 (a 4:3 screen size format), the PSP's screen modes can stretch that size out to a full widescreen while still looking good. We would have preferred a native 480x272 resolution support (which would have meant bigger MPEG-4 filesizes), the PSP still performs video brilliantly.

Congratulations! You’re the owner of one of the most dynamic entertainment devices ever created. With your new PSP, your photos, music and videos are always just a flick of the power switch away. Maximizing your ‘PSP experience’ shouldn’t be a difficult task, and with the help of this and other guides; you should be well on your way to portable bliss.

This guide was written to serve as a source of answers for new PSP owners who are either confused by, or haven’t bothered reading the PSP manual. If you were referred here by someone in an IRC channel then you’ve probably asked a question that could be found by searching, or by reading further…

The PSP Value Pack includes everything you need to start enjoying game’s and other UMD media. What it doesn’t come with is a way to move media both to and from your Memory Stick Duo. To do this you need to purchase a USB (Full ~ Mini) Cord or a PC based Memory Stick Reader. Most digital cameras come with a USB cord that can be used with the PSP. If you own a digital camera, you may already have the necessary connections.

Once you’ve completed the Initial setup as instructed in the PSP manual; it’s a good idea to check your firmware version. PSP’s manufactured for North American consumers ship with firmware version 1.50 or 1.52. While there are external indicators as to what firmware version your PSP has, the easiest and most accurate way is to simply check the PSP’s settings menu.

Scroll to the ‘Settings’ selection on the far left of the PSP menu.
Scroll down to the ‘System Settings’ menu and press the X button.
Scroll down to the ‘System Information’ menu and press the X button.

At this point you should be presented with a screen displaying the MAC Address, System Software, and the Nickname you’ve given your PSP. The number listed after ‘Version’ indicates what version firmware your PSP currently has.

Version 1.00: Homebrew friendly, JDM PSP.
Version 1.50: Homebrew friendly after exploits.
Version 1.52: Not homebrew friendly. No known working exploits.
Version 1.51: Not homebrew friendly, but that’s the least of your problems.
Version 2.00: Not homebrew friendly, includes features not seen in earlier versions.

As stated earlier, North American PSP’s shipped with firmware versions 1.50 or 1.52. Version 1.51 was released as a network update over a month before the exploitable flaws of Version 1.50 were discovered. If your new PSP states its version 1.51 then it’s safe to assume that it isn’t new at all. It’s very likely that you’ve purchased a returned PSP that’s been resold as new.

Adding and Organizing Media (Photos/Music/Movies)

One of the PSP’s best features is its ability to display and playback various media types. These media types include JPEG pictures, MP3 and ATRAC audio, and MP4 encoded video.

Formatting your Memory Stick Duo

Scroll to the ‘Settings’ menu and then to ‘System Settings’ and press X.
Scroll to ‘Format Memory Stick’ and press X.
When asked if you want to format the Memory Stick Duo highlight ‘Yes’ and press the X button.

Once the PSP is done formatting your Memory Stick Duo, you’re ready to connect it to your PC and complete the file structure setup.

If you’re using a USB cable connected to your PSP:

Exit the system settings menu, scroll up to ‘USB Connection’ and press X.
Connect the USB cable to your PSP as instructed in the manual. (Pg. 96)

Your PC should recognize the Memory Stick Duo and assign it a drive letter.

If you’re using a Memory Stick Reader:

Power you PSP off to insure it’s not attempting to access your Memory Stick Duo.
Remove your Memory Stick Duo from your PSP and insert it in your Memory Stick Reader.

Pictures and Music/Audio are the easiest to place correctly on the Memory Stick Duo. Simply place the Pictures or Audio files in the appropriate folders and the PSP will display them in its menu.

Reminder: Pictures MUST be in JPEG format and Music must be either MP3 or ATRAC.

Video:

The file structure for Video is a little different. While the video files must be in the correct folder, they also must adhere to a very specific naming convention for the PSP to display them.

Ok, so you want to unbrick or downgrade your PSP but don't have a PSP capable of running homebrew apps. No problem! In this tutorial I will show you how to modify the battery's hardware to make it activate service mode.

This is our victim. Please note that while this concept may work on non-Sony batteries, only official batteries are guaranteed to have the same internals, so we recommend using one.

STEP 1:

The first thing you need to do is obviously crack open the battery. Surprisingly, the battery isn't very hard to get in to. In this picture you can see that I'm just using a guitar pick to slide in through an edge and slide around the perimeter of the battery to seperate the two halves.

STEP 2:

Next, we need to locate a certain chip. The chip has the model number S93C56 printed on it. We are going to need to desolder pin 5 and lift it off of the board. Here is a magnified view of the board, which shows where the chip is and which pin needs to be lifted.

Newer batteries have a much smaller board with a different layout. The same chip needs to have the pin lifted, but the chip is in a different position. Once you've located chip S93C56, the rest of the instructions are basically the same. This has been confirmed with the 2200 mAH Official Sony battery.

STEP 3:

If you are not confident in your soldering skills, have a less than steady hand or have a larger-than-optimal sized tip, please desolder the cell pack from the battery first. If you make contact between pins 5 and 6 then you will short ground to +3.6VDC! Not good! When desoldering the cell, only keep the iron on long enough to melt the solder. If you can, use a higher wattage iron so that the tip will be hotter, but you won't transfer as much heat to the cell pack. Remember that heat + Li-Ion battery = large explosion (t3h sux0r5, unless you get in on video. Seriously though, this operation is not for the faint hearted, and should definitely not be your first soldering experience. I recommend trying your hand on lifting the pins on an N64 CPU chip. Surely if you spend enough time here you have a couple killed N64 mobos laying around. )

Now is actually desoldering the pin. There are a few ways you could do this, but I think my method is the best because its less likely to damage components near by. Use an Xacto knife with a sharp tip and try to put it underneath the pin. Get somebody to hold a soldering iron (WITH A VERY FINE CONICAL TIP!) on the pin. When the solder melts you can pop the pin up with the knife. Be sure not to hold the iron on the board too long to avoid the lithium battery from getting too hot and exploding. When your done it will look something like this.

STEP 4:

Finally, close the battery's casing. Use some Krazy Glue to keep it closed, or just use electrical tape around the edges like I did. I don't actually recommend the electrical tape as it makes the battery very snug in the compartment and it takes a bit of force to get it out. You can use the battery just like a regular Pandora's battery. As for getting the Memory Stick files, I can tell you that they are out there and you can find them after a bit of Googling. However, I can't tell you exactly where to find them as they contain copyrighted Sony code, and sharing them is illegal.

How does this work?

The pin that we just lifted was actually the ground pin of the EEPROM. Removing this pin effectively shuts off the EEPROM. When the microcontroller inside the battery tries to read the EEPROM, it will think the EEPROM contains all 1s (in binary). This is because of the pull-up resistors on the data lines. So the microcontroller returns a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF to the PSP, which then goes into service mode.

[HOWTO] Despertar del Cementerio v3 and v4 Installation

Intro:

Lots of questions pop up in these forums lately on how to install Despertar del Cementerio v3 and/or v4 (DCv*).
Numerous threads on the matter are created, because the newbies can't find their answers.

This is not a complete howto, but should get people in the right direction.
And if they do have any questions, they can ask here instead of starting a new thread.

What is DCv* ?

DCv* is a powerfull tool created by the greatest devs in the psp scene. It is an evolved version of the Pandora's Battery. Pandora was first created to unbrick psp's. However Pandora wasn't compatible with the psp slim. Therefore DC was coded. The latest versions (v3 and v4) have full compatibility with classic and slim psp's.

DCv3 allows you to:
- Write custom fw M33 3.71-2 to ANY model psp (regardless of fw version) to date
- Write official fw 3.71 to ANY model psp (regardless of fw version) to date
- Create a nand dump from the psp (the nand holds the fw on the psp)
- Write a nand dump to the psp.

DCv4 allows you to:
- Write custom fw M33 3.80-5 to ANY model psp (regardless of fw version) to date
- Write official fw 3.80 to ANY model psp (regardless of fw version) to date
- Create a nand dump from the psp (the nand holds the fw on the psp)
- Write a nand dump to the psp.

NOTE: DO NOT USE A DUMP FROM ANOTHER PSP. IT WILL DESTROY THE IDSTORAGE. THERE'S NO WAY OF REGENERATING THE IDSTORAGE. THE ONLY WAY OF RECOVERING THE IDSTORAGE IS FROM A NAND DUMP FROM YOUR OWN PSP. THEREFORE ALWAYS MAKE A NAND DUMP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING WITH DCv3 and/or v4 !

To let the memstick do it's magic you'll need a battery which will put the psp in 'service mode'. There's several options how to obtain such a battery.

1) Create it with a homebrew capable psp. That's a psp running cfw or official 1.50 fw.

NOTICE: Newer slims can't convert batteries due to $ony hardware revisions. If you are a slim owner, already running cfw, who wants to check if you can or cannot convert batteries, run the PSPident tool. You can find it in the attachments.
Your slim can't convert batteries if the app displays these values:
Tachyon:0x00500000
Baryon:0x00234000
Pommel:0x00000123

Motherboard Type: Slim (02g)
Motherboard Model: TA-085 v2

2) Create it by hard modding a battery. This is not for beginners, it is potentially dangerous as you are opening your battery.
3) Buy a battery from the internet. Your on your own on this one, as I do not promote the financial exploitation of psp devs.

Once you have the battery all you need now are the correct files on the memstick. Once again there are several ways of putting them on.

1) Create the stick using a homebrew capable psp.
2) Create the stick without a homebrew capable psp.

That's all the options we have. Now you know what DCv* is, where it came from and how you can get it.
I'll put all the needed downloads and information below here in links and attachments.

Downloads:

If you do not have access to a homebrew capable psp use the following files:

- Use this pack to install DCv4 on your memstick. Just download the pack, extract the archive and run it by clicking "Click here to start" and follow the instructions on screen. Special thanks go to outer92 for his original batch file.

- Hard modding your battery This will tell you exactly how and which chip to alter.

If you have access to a homebrew capable psp (slim or classic) use the following files:

- To create the DCv3 yourself you need the 1.50 eboot, the 3.40 eboot and the 3.71 eboot. Also use the DCv3 attachment. It comes with a comprehensive readme.

-To create DCv4 use the same files as above, but instead of the 3.71 eboot you need the 3.80 eboot. Also use the DCv4 attachment. It comes with a comprehensive readme.

- To create the battery use one of the tools. Slim users and classic psp with M33 3.71 without 1.50 kernel use the 3.xx tool.
If you are on M33 3.80, use the BatTool 0.5 as the others will not work.
All tools will also allow you to convert your battery back to normal.

That should get all of you started. I know it's not complete. For usage of DCv*, check the readme included.

Note 2007-09-18: Do not attempt to change any icons on the XMB, it seems that they implemented a check to see if the files are genuine, changing them might result in a semi-brick.
Note 2007-09-11: The steps for creating the battery are likely to change in the near future, Booster and Mathieulh seem to be working on a way to include multiple IPL's on one Magic Memory Stick, to make it both Fat and Slim compatible.
For now, just follow the steps below.

(0-1) REQUIREMENTS:

(0-1-A) A "fat" PSP running firmware 1.50 or custom firmware, together with a non-el-cheapo battery.
(0-1-B) A "slim" PSP running firmware 3.60, it is NOT possible to install this on a higher firmware version!
(0-1-C) Memory Stick PRO duo, NOT a Memory Stick Duo, 64 MB should be fine, but must be 4 GB or less. (According to PROD, 4GB doesn't work at all, other people said that their 4GB did work)
(0-1-D) AC Adapter.

(0-2) TESTED ON:

(0-2-A) White Fat PSP TA-082 (IC1003) with original 1800mA battery and firmware v3.52 M33 Update 4 (english)
(0-2-B) Black Slim PSP with original 1200mA battery and firmware v3.60 (english)
(0-2-C) Sony 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
(0-2-D) Original AC Adapter

(0-3) QUESTIONS/ANSWERS:

(0-3-A)
Q: I Only have a PSP Slim and no PSP Fat, can I install the M33 CFW?
A: No, you must have a PSP Fat to create the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery.

(0-3-B)
Q: I did not backup the "KD" folder after creating the "ordinary" Pandora's Battery, now I can't turn my battery back to normal. Can you send me the proper files?
A: No, but what you can do is boot up your Fat PSP without the Stick and Battery (use AC Adapter), then insert Stick and Battery and run "Pandora's Battery Creator".

Q: After I have created the Magic Memory Stick for the Slim PSP, can I still use it to unbrick/downgrade the Fat PSP?
A: No, and that's why you should make a backup of the KD folder after making the "ordinary" Magic Memory Stick. Just put back the KD folder from the "ordinary" Magic Memory Stick and you can use it on the Fat PSP again, no need to modify the battery in any way. ( (1-1-J) and (2-1-F) )

Q: Can I use the newly 3.60 M33 enabled PSP Slim to revert Pandora's Battery back to a normal one after the installation? Or do I have to use the Fat PSP?
A: No, you must use the Fat PSP. (thanks DarkSeveN) The function to write the Battery's EEPROM was accidently left in 1.50, Sony removed it right after discovering that, so 1.51 or higher kernels can't write the battery's EEPROM.

(0-3-E)
Q: I can't see the two or three applications on the XMB after putting them in "GAME150".
A: Try putting them in "GAME" or in "GAME352" (replace 352 with your version, example: you have 3.40 OE-A, then make a folder called "GAME340")

(0-3-F)
Q: I'm running Vista and I have a problem running MSPFORMAT, what can I do?
A: Some people reported this problem, there seems to be no way around this at the moment (besides from running it on XP). I recommend to continue without the MSPFORMAT step, in some cases it works without it.

(0-3-G)
Q: I already have the Pandora Battery for the Fat PSP and want to convert it to the Slim, what do I have to do?
A: Follow steps 1-1-F (copy over 'pandora_slim'), 1-1-H (copy over 3.40 and 3.50 updates) and 1-1-N (run 3.60 mem-stick installer). Basicly you just have to read the M33 Readme, you've already done that, right?

Make sure the battery has enough power (how about 100% ? )

(0-4-F) I recommend taking a look at the Readme's from both "Pandora's Battery" and "M33 Custom Firmware 3.60". This way you'll not only see the procedure from my point of view.
(0-4-G) When writing files to the memory stick, you can either do this by USB, or Card Reader, it doesn't matter apart from the speed.
(0-4-H) I recommend to NOT press any buttons on the PSP until I have stated to do so.
(0-4-I) If at any point your PSP won't turn on again because you already created the Magic Memory Stick or the Battery, take them out and use the AC Adapter to start the PSP, then put them both back in.

(1-1) INSTALLATION PART 1:

(1-1-A) Connect stick through USB or Card Reader to PC.

(1-1-B) ( obsolete step, though it is in the Pandora's Battery Readme, the next step already does this part )
Format the memory stick, you can do this in many ways.
Easiest would probably be with the Windows utility: My Computer > Right click the stick > Format > Enable "Quick..." > Start
Or use a command prompt: (replace X: with your drive and MyLabel with any label you want)

(1-1-C) Open a Dos prompt (Start > Run > CMD > OK) and enter these commands, replace "C:\Pandora's Battery\mspformat" with the folder where your "mspformat.exe" is. Also replace X with the drive of your stick.

mspformat.exe X

It will ask: All data will be lost. Do you want to continue?. Type 'y' and press enter.
It should then say: Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.

Start > Run > Type this and press OK:
C:\mspformat\mspformat.exe X

But, you must find out by yourself what the correct Path and Memory Stick drive-letter are (in example: "C:\mspformat\" and "X").

(1-1-D) Disable USB connection, remove the Memory Stick. Then re-insert the stick and enable the USB connection (or, eject from cardreader and insert again)
(1-1-E) Create a folder on the stick with the name "PSP", in the PSP folder make one called "GAME150"
(1-1-F) Copy these folders from the Pandora package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_battery", "pandora_battery%", "pbfirm_install" and "pbfirm_install%"
(1-1-G) Copy these folders from the M33 package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_slim" and "pandora_slim%"
(1-1-H) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 1.50 update package and rename it to "UPDATE.PBP", then copy it to the ROOT of the memory stick.
(1-1-I) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 3.40 and 3.50 update packages and rename them "340.PBP" and "350.PBP", then copy them to the "pandora_slim" folder.

(1-1-J) Put the stick in the "fat" PSP (or disable USB connection) and run "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer"
Once loaded, press X to create the required files on the stick and wait for it to exit to XMB.

(1-1-K) Connect stick through USB or Card Reader to PC.

(1-1-L) I recommend making a complete backup of the memory stick at this point. [backup 1]
Keep the "KD" folder in a safe place if you want to use the Magic Memory Stick on the "fat" PSP in the future.

(1-1-M) Copy the newly created "msipl.bin" from the memory stick to the "msinst" folder of the Pandora package located on your hard drive.

(1-1-N) Open a Dos prompt (Start > Run > CMD > OK) and enter these commands, replace "C:\Pandora's Battery\msinst" with the folder where your "msinst.exe" and "msipl.bin" are. Also replace X with the drive of your stick.

msinst.exe X msipl.bin

It will ask "Are You Sure ?[Y]", type 'y' and press enter.
You now have created the original Magic Memory Stick

But again, you must find out by yourself what the correct Path and Memory Stick drive-letter are (in example: "C:\msinst\" and "X").

(1-1-O) Put the stick in the "fat" PSP (or disable USB connection) and run "Pandora Ext. for Slim 3.60 M33 Installer"
Once loaded, press X to create the new files on the stick and wait for it to exit to XMB.
You now have created the Magic Memory Stick for the "slim" PSP.

(1-1-P) Run "Pandora's Battery Creator"

(1-1-Q) First press "triangle" to backup the battery's EEPROM to the stick, you can use this to restore it to a normal battery later on.
It's also possible to restore without the EEPROM backup, though it is unclear what the difference is.

(1-1-R) Press X to convert your battery to Pandora's Battery.

(1-1-S) Again, I recommend to make a backup, at least backup the "eeprom.bin" that you (might have) created earlier. [backup 2]
Keep the "KD" folder in a safe place if you want to use the Magic Memory Stick on the "slim" PSP in the future.

(1-2) INSTALLATION PART 2:

(1-2-A) Make sure the "slim" PSP is off. Put the SLIMinized Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery in it.
I was having a hard time slamming the "fat" battery into the "slim" PSP, but you just have to push it hard until you hear a click.
It should turn on by itself, though you won't see anything on the screen.

(1-2-B) You have several options here, if you just want to modify the firmware to M33, press X.
This shouldn't take more than a couple seconds, and then it will turn off automaticly.
Other options are "Square" and "L + R + triangle", the use of these options are out of the scope of this guide, refer to the Readme of the M33 package for more info.

(1-2-C) Remove the Magic Memory Stick and insert the normal "slim" battery.

Your "slim" PSP is now ready for use with homebrew!

(2-1) RESTORE BATTERY TO NORMAL ONE (optional):

(2-1-A) (Make sure you haven't deleted anything on the Magic Memory Stick inbetween the steps, if you did delete anything, at least put back "pandora_battery", "pandora_battery%" and "eeprom.bin")

(2-1-B) Turn on the "fat" PSP without the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery inserted, but with the AC Adapter.

(2-1-C) Insert the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery after it was powered on.

(2-1-D) Run "Pandora's Battery Creator"

(2-1-E) Press L-Trigger + R-Trigger to restore the battery to a normal one with the use of "eeprom.bin"
You could get an error at this point: "Error writing at address 0x14".
Ignore this error, it happens most of the times, if not always.

Everything should be back to normal now.

(2-1-F) If you want to make the Magic Memory Stick to work again for the "fat" PSP, just put back the "KD" folder that you backed up earlier.
